OVC Student-Athletes Shine On the Field and In the Classroom

Ohio Valley Conference fans should be proud not only of its athletics, but of its athletes as well.

Last week, the OVC announced that 188 of its student-athletes received the Medal of Honor for the 2013–14 season. The award is given annually to student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average in a Conference-sponsored sport – all in this case had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the year.

If that weren’t impressive enough, 17 of the 188 recipients were awarded Medals of Honor for multiple sports.

But the impressive academic careers of OVC student-athletes don’t end there – 1,254 were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, setting a conference record. The previous record was 1,228.

To be named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, student-athletes must achieve and maintain a 3.25 or higher GPA and remain eligible to compete throughout the season.

Belmont University was awarded the Institutional Academic Achievement Award, presented annually to the institution with the greatest percentage of eligible student-athletes who earn a 3.25 GPA or higher that year. This marks the second consecutive year that Belmont took home the honor.

The league also announced the recipients of 16 OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards, presented annually in each conference-sponsored sport to the member institution’s team with the greatest percentage of eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher.

Belmont claimed an OVC-best six awards, followed by Morehead State with three and SIUE with two awards. In total, seven different member institutions garnered at least one award.

The team/institution honorees are:

Baseball: Southeast Missouri

Men’s Basketball: Belmont

Women’s Basketball: Belmont

Men’s Cross Country: Morehead State

Women’s Cross Country: SIUE

Football: Tennessee Tech

Men’s Golf: Belmont
